Using a tumble dryer correctly is essential to ensure your clothes dry evenly, save time and prevent damage to fabrics. At Clean&Easy, your self-service laundromat in Barcelona, we explain how to load your dryer and choose the right temperature and drying time for different types of laundry.
1. Don’t Overload the Dryer
One of the most common mistakes is overfilling the drum. For clothes to dry properly, hot air must be able to circulate freely between the garments. If the clothes are packed too tightly, they cannot move around enough, and the air cannot reach all the fabrics evenly.
As a result, some items may be dry while others remain damp, forcing you to extend the drying cycle.
Leave enough space for the clothes to tumble freely. If you have a large amount of laundry, it is better to split it into two loads rather than overload a single dryer or choose a larger dryer.
2. Which Temperature Should You Choose?
The temperature depends on the type of fabric. Always check the care label before putting clothes in the dryer.
- Cotton and towels: medium or high heat, if the care label allows it.
- Bed sheets and everyday clothing: medium heat to help achieve even drying.
- Synthetic fabrics: low heat to prevent damage or deformation.
- Delicate garments: low heat or no-heat drying, if permitted.
Sorting clothes by fabric type and thickness helps them dry in the same amount of time.
3. How Long Does a Tumble Dryer Take?
Drying time depends on how wet the clothes are, the washing machine’s spin cycle and the size of the load.
As a general guide, lightweight clothes may take 15–25 minutes, while thick towels may require 30–45 minutes or longer. Check the clothes before adding more time to avoid over-drying.
